Is Your Home Surge Protector Still Working After a Major Surge?
The storm came through around four. Lights blinked twice. Now the garage fridge is dead, the router keeps rebooting. You’re standing at the electrical panel staring at a little indicator light with no idea what it’s telling you. That’s the call I get most often in Richmond the morning after a major surge.
What actually happens inside the device
Most whole-home units clamp voltage with metal oxide varistors MOVs. They sit idle until voltage climbs past a set point, then send the excess to ground. Every event they absorb costs them a little capacity. Think of a bucket that fills and never drains. Years of routine utility switching blips might use a tenth of it. One major surge can take the rest in a millisecond.
Here’s the part that catches homeowners, the device keeps passing power either way. Lights on, AC running, protection gone. Current flowing through a surge protector and that protector still doing its job are two separate facts.
How to tell whether yours took the hit
Start with the indicator. After a major surge, that’s the first thing I check, and I compare it against the manual indicator behavior isn’t standardized across brands, and a lit power switch on a plug-in strip tells you nothing about whether it’s still protecting anything.

A major surge doesn’t stop politely at the service. Walk the house. Garage fridge, HVAC control board, well pump if you’re off county water, garage door opener, cable modem. Some failures show up within the hour. Others take weeks, because a stressed capacitor doesn’t announce itself.
A panel-mounted unit clamps at the service and still lets a few hundred volts continue downstream, which is why I put point-of-use strips on the TV, the desktop, and the network gear even in houses with solid protection at the panel.
And ask what caused it. Lights that brighten and dim, breakers tripping for no reason, warmth at a receptacle that can be a loose neutral in your own service, not the utility.

Read the label first. On some models a lit indicator means protection is active. On others it just means the device has power. Two very different meanings, same little green light.
Do I need a permit just to swap one out?
