The panel unit is installed. The electrician’s truck is gone. And now you’re behind the TV staring at a tangle of power strips, wondering if you can finally throw them out. For the most part, no.

They’re not redundant, they cover a different part of the problem. But you probably don’t need as many as you’ve got, and at least one of them is doing absolutely nothing back there.

What the Panel Device Actually Stops

The whole home surge protector at your service panel watches incoming voltage and sends the excess to ground before it gets too far into your home’s circuits. That handles the big stuff arriving off the utility line, like Dominion switching a circuit, power coming back after a storm knocks out half of Lakeside, or a nearby strike coupling into the lines.

Richmond sees somewhere around three dozen thunderstorm days a year, most of them crammed into June through August. Not a small job.

What the panel device doesn’t do is catch everything perfectly. Some voltage gets past it. And plenty of disturbances never come from outside at all, a garage freezer compressor kicking on, or a heat pump starting up on a July afternoon, can move voltage around inside your own walls.

I wouldn’t hang one off every receptacle in the house. Use them where losing the equipment would actually cost you something.

Home offices first. A homeowner over in the Museum District called me out after a storm took her desktop and a monitor she’d owned for three weeks. The whole desk was running through a plain outlet multiplier with no protective components in it whatsoever.

Networking gear counts too. A modem and router don’t seem expensive until you’re on a work call watching lights blink.

Entertainment centers and gaming setups round it out. Past that, you’re buying power strips to protect a lamp.

Half the Strips You Own Aren’t Protecting Anything

This is the part that catches people. A lot of what’s sold as protection is just receptacles on a cord with a switch, no protective components inside at all, and nothing on the packaging says so unless you read the fine print.

Check for a joule rating, a listed clamping voltage, and a UL 1449 mark. If those aren’t printed on the housing, it’s an extension cord in a costume.

Then check the indicator light. The components inside power strips degrade a little every time they absorb a hit, and the outlets keep delivering power long after the surge protection is spent. That light is the entire warning system.

Most units I pull out from behind furniture in older Fan District homes are eight or ten years old and dead as protection.

The Path You’re Not Watching

Surges don’t only arrive through the receptacle. Your TV has a coax line running to it. Your desktop probably has Ethernet. Older houses around here still have telephone pairs stapled along the baseboards. Every one of those is a conductor straight into the equipment.

So a good strip under the TV with an unprotected coax feed going into the back of it is a gap, not a plan. Buy the version with coax and Ethernet pass-through if your gear uses them.

And none of this works well over questionable grounding. The panel device needs a solid grounding electrode system to dump into, and a lot of Richmond housing stock predates the requirements we work under now the NEC edition Virginia enforces calls for a surge protective device on new and replaced services. Checking that is an electrician’s job, not a Saturday project.

FAQ

So can I just toss all my power strips now?

Not all of them. Keep the rated surge-protective ones serving electronics you’d hate to replace, and pitch the no-name units with no ratings printed anywhere on them. Two or three good ones usually covers a typical Richmond three-bedroom.

Can I plug the fridge into a power strip?

Don’t. Refrigerators and window units pull too much current and belong in a properly rated wall receptacle. If the nearest outlet is already loaded up, that’s a wiring problem, and adding a strip just hides it.

How do I tell if mine still works?

Look for the protection indicator light. If it’s dark, the internal components are used up even though the outlets still deliver power fine. If there’s no indicator at all, the unit likely never had surge protection to begin with.

Will the panel device stop lightning?

It reduces damage from nearby strikes and induced surges, which is most of what we actually see around here. A direct hit is a different animal, and nothing on the market makes a house immune. Grounding and bonding matter as much as the device.

Can I plug one strip into another?

No. Daisy-chaining power strips piles load onto one branch circuit and is a genuine fire risk inspectors flag it every time. If a room never has enough receptacles, add receptacles.
